| Description | Party: Herlewin, I, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory Party: Virgil the clerk Virgil has been instituted as rector of Meopham at the request of Pope Alexander III and 'Dominus' Richard of Dover, archbishop of Canterbury. Richard has also granted the priory the church of Meopham for the use of the poor. Virgil has consented to this grant and ought therefore to remain rector for life and continue to receive the tithes of grain, young animals and other offerings. Because Virgil has agreed to the protection of the poor, he may suffer some lessening of his right ('iuris diminutio'). He shall hold the church of the priory for an annual payment of 1 bezant ('bisantium'), payable as specified to the priory's almonry.
