| Description | From: the mayor and aldermen of the city of London
Exemplification of an assize of intrusion ('assisa de Intrusione') held at the Guildhall, London, on 20 Feb 1406 before Henry Barton and William Crowner, sheriffs of London. Thomas [Chillenden, I], prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, claimed that Thomas Wilford, citizen and fishmonger ('Piscenarius') of London, and William Coventre, citizen and mercer of London, disseised him of a quit-rent of £4 15s for a tenement in the parishes of St Mary Colechurch and St Mary-le-Bow ('de Arcubus'). The case was brought in the court of Husting on 25 Jan 1406. William and Thomas deny the accusation. William claims that the tenement consists of 2 messuages, one in St Mary Colechurch parish and the other in St Mary-le-Bow parish. He is the tenant of the messuage in St Mary-le-Bow parish, which owes a rent of 50s, and says that the prior was never seised of that rent. The assize was taken and the jurors, Simon Sewale, Richard Person, John Norman, Robert Betoign, John Cosseham, John lane, John Crouche, William Norton, William Burton, Edmund Grymston', Nicholas Hamme and Richard Michell say that the prior sought the rent from William and Thomas through William Appulby, his receiver of rents, and that Thomas and William, inciting each other, refused to pay the rents and the arrears. They also say that Prior Thomas de Ringmere was seised of the rent in the time of King Henry III, that the rent has been in arrears for 9¼ years and that the prior has suffered damages of 40s by the disseisin. The prior is to recover seisin of the rent, the arrears, damages and costs, amounting to £45 18s 9d in all, and William and Thomas are in mercy.
