| Description | Party: Thomas de Ringmere, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory Party: the dean and chapter of St Paul's cathedral, London
Relating to the priory's sede vacante administration of the see of London during a vacancy. Recites composition between the dean and chapter and Archbishop Boniface [of Savoy], dated 21 Aug 1262 at Mortlake [Surrey] and Archbishop Robert Kilwardby's modification of this composition, made when the see of London became vacant on the death of bishop Henry of Sandwich, dated at Lambeth [Surrey], 27 Sep 1273. Boniface's composition describes the procedure for appointing an official to administer the diocese during the vacancy. It also sets out what the official should pay to the archbishop and dean and chapter and defines the scope of his jurisdiction. Boniface's composition also defines the dean and chapter's jurisdiction, including jurisdiction over St Osyth's Abbey [Essex], Haliwell Priory [Shoreditch, Middlesex], St Mary of Bethlehem Hospital ('novus hospitalis extra Bissopesgate') [Middlesex], [Little] Dunmow Priory [Essex] and Clerkenwell Priory [Middlesex]. Archbishop Kilwardby confirms Boniface's composition, but alters the provisions relating to the payment of the official's expenses and gives him jurisdiction over Little Dunmow Priory and Clerkenwell Priory. The cathedral priory and dean and chapter confirm the modified composition, but with provision for the cathedral priory to assume the archbishop's role when the see of Canterbury is vacant. Priory's part of indenture. Given at Canterbury.
