| Description | From: William of Corbeil, archbishop of Canterbury
Addressed to the clerks and laymen, barons and priests, men of London. For a long time there has been a dispute between the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and Barking Abbey ('Berchinges'). The abbess appeared before the archbishop at Lambeth ('lamheda'') [Surrey] and agreed to grant the priory the land concerned if he could produce witnesses from the city of London who could prove that the priory had ever possessed ('investitus') it. However, on the appointed day the abbess refused to accept the witnesses, saying that she had understood something else. The witnesses refused to do anything other than what had been decided and went away, so no progress was made. Later the abbess came to the archbishop and acknowledged what had been agreed. A day has now been fixed for the judgement. The archbishop asks the addressees not to favour himself or the abbess, but to give a just judgement. No date. [Date: William's dates as archbishop.]
