| Description | From: the prior of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury [papal judge delegate]; the prior of Monks Horton Priory [papal judge delegate]; the prior of Faversham Abbey [papal judge delegate]
[Document damaged. A few small areas of text illegible.] Recites the mandate of Pope Honorius III, dated 11 Nov 1219 at Viterbo [Viterbo, Italy]. The prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory have complained that the prior and convent of Leeds Priory, R[eginald] de Cornhell' and W de C[eritun]e?, knights, and other clerks and layment of the dioceses of Canterbury, London and Winchester have injured them concerning tithes, rents, possessions, debts and other matters. The pope delegates the case to the three priors. The judges summoned the brothers of Les Dunes Abbey [West-Flanders, Belgium], living in [the Isle of] Sheppey through their proctor and the priory's proctor sought an annual payment of 4s from them, which he said they were bound to pay as specified in the priory's treasury at Canterbury. Lambert, the abbey's proctor, arranged on behalf of the brothers that they would make the payment in the treasury at the term specified by the priory's proctor and promised that in future the payment would be made at the said place and time without any trouble. The abbey submitted to the judges' jurisdiction. Dated St John the Baptist's day following the translation of St Thomas Becket. Given at Canterbury Cathedral church.
Endorsed with description, stating that the definitive sentence relates to Leysdown and the tithes of 'stapindun'' in Sheppey, in 13th and late 13th cent hands. |
