TitleNotification of arbitration
PreviousNumbersL 134 (Norris); L 131 (late 19th c)
Date[16 Nov 1200 x Apr 1201]
DescriptionFrom: Hubert Walter, archbishop of Canterbury
To: Pope Innocent III

The pope had delegated the hearing and trying ('cognicio') of the cause between the archbishop and the prior and monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory concerning the rebuilding of the chapel at Lambeth to H[ugh of Avalon], bishop of Lincoln, E[ustace], bishop of Ely and S[amson], abbot of Bury St Edmunds. At first no agreement could be reached because both sides clung more forcefully and vehemently to their positions. However, eventually a compromise was reached, both concerning the chapel and concerning other matters disputed between the parties. Recites the arbitration award as in DCc-ChAnt/L/130. The archbishop asks the pope to confirm the arbitrators' decision. No date. [Date: as in English Episcopal Acta, cited below.]
