Exemplification of an assize of fresh force ('frisca forcia') held at the Guildhall, London, in St Lawrence Jewry ('in veteri Judaismo') parish, on 12 Jul 1433 before John Paddeslee and John Olney, sheriffs of London. William [Molashe, I], prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, claimed that Thomas Seersam, 'Dominus' Robert Trewell, chaplain ('capellanus'), Richard Joyner, John Lane, ironmonger, and Richard Lucas, brewer, had disseised him of a of a rent of 20s, payable for a tenement in St Martin Ludgate without ('extra Ludgate') parish, London. Details of the prior's evidence. He says that the tenement is a messuage called 'the Walshman on the Hoope' outside Ludgate which was of Robert le Panner. John de Flete, citizen and capper ('capellarus') of London, by his will enrolled in the court of Husting on 11 Mar 1280, bequeathed the rent to maintain a wax light before St Thomas Becket's shrine at Canterbury and through this legacy Prior Thomas de Ringmere was seised of the rent. The assize was taken and the jurors, William Genor, John Athelarde, Henry Bagley, Henry Longspe, John Hill, esq, Robert Croke, William Peper, William Anncres, Geoffrey Gybon, Richard Lynsey, John Fynch and Richard Strangham, confirm the prior's version of events. They say that 100s is owed for 5 years' arrears and they assess damages and costs at 20s. The prior is to recover seisin of the rent, damages and costs and the arrears, amounting in all to £6, and Thomas, Robert, Richard, John and Richard are in mercy. The clerk is Stapilton. Given at the Guildhall, London.
