DescriptionFrom: Robert Walrand, bishop of Ferns
To: the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory

The bishop has inspected ancient letters which show that when the English first entered Ireland, in the time of Henry II, they gave many Irish churches and lands to the priory to the honour of St Thomas Becket. Some of these belonged to Ferns Cathedral and there was a lawsuit between the bishop and chapter of Ferns and the priory. An agreement was reached by which the priory quitclaimed to the bishop and chapter for the manor of Fethard ('Fytherid') and the bishop and chapter renounced all rights in the churches the priory claimed.
Now John Lyneyt' claims, in the name of his wife, to be the heir of Richard of London, to whom the priory gave the vill ('villa') of Fethard. John says that he has a charter, which some have seen, sealed with a small seal which is not the seal the priory uses now, and that he was enfeoffed by the priory. He has taken out a writ against the bishop and intends to undermine ('enervo') the agreement.
The bishop asks the prior to have a search made in the archives ('instrumenta antiqua') in his treasury for a feoffment made to Richard of London or a quitclaim made by him. The bishop also asks the prior to seal his letters in this matter with the seal the priory used to use and to let him know if he can find any other way of preserving the agreement. He encloses a transcript of the charter which [John] says the priory made to Richard of London and is sealed with the small seal.
Given at Ireland.
