| Description | Record of proceedings on behalf of the King's Remembrancer of the Exchequer to determine whether the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory contribute to aids for knighting the king's eldest son and marrying his eldest daughter for 1½ knight's fees in Monks Eleigh ('Illeye') and ¼ of a fee in Deopham. The proceedings were initiated by Edward III's writ dated 12 Jun 1366, which stated that the priory's lands at Monks Eleigh and Deopham had been distrained for 60s and 10s for the knighting of the king's eldest son [Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince] in 1346-1347. Many details obtained from searches in the records of the Chancery and Exchequer, including a reference to a payment of 60 marks towards an aid for marrying Henry III's sister Isabella to Emperor Frederick [in 1235] which the king remitted and assigned to the building ('operatio') of St Thomas's shrine. Also includes a record of the proceedings of inquisitions held at Norfolk on 9 Apr 1369 in the presence of Roger de Meres and John de Fencotes, justices of assize, and at Clare on 29 Sep 1371 in the presence of Laurence de Alwarthorp'. In both cases the juries stated that the priory held the lands in pure and perpetual alms and was therefore exempt from paying the aids. No date. [Date: handwriting and date of original.] Original dated 46EdwIII, no month. |
