| Description | An inquistion made at the command of the prior [of Canterbury Cathedral Priory], concerning the place where the condemned were buried and where the gallows ('furce') were in the vill of Monks Eleigh ('villa de ylleye'). The jurors say that the place where William Fant, who killed himself, was buried is Richard de leleseye's own tenement and that he and his ancestors defended it at the court of Monks Eleigh for a certain service. A woman was burned in a pit ('fossatum') near the tenement, on the prior's demesne, and a cow was enclosed there for trespass, but no judgement was ever made there and the gallows were never raised there. They say that the gallows were raised in a place called 'Fulsclo' on the prior's demesne and were thrown down by Fyn le lord, who made and completed the judgement in the place near Richard's tenement. No date. [Date: handwriting.]
