| CustodialHistory | This document was bought from John Wilson, booksellers, in April 2006. It was included in a private collection of documents bought by the booksellers, with no further details of the history or provenance of the collection available. The collection contained no further documents of relevance to Canterbury. Its provenance is curious, as it bears the endorsements of Samuel Norris and Cyprian Rondeau Bunce, but not their catalogue numbers. The medieval endorsement clearly shows that it was the priory's part of the indenture, and formed part of the priory's muniments. It appears that it strayed from the cathedral's muniments in the early 19th century. No other cases of strays during this period are known. Norris marked the charter 'Ickham' and added the letter O. He catalogued most other Ickham charters under his section K, under 'Knoldane' or Knowlton. Some of the Ickham charters were indeed endorsed in the Middle Ages with this placename, for a place now unidentified which seems to have formed part of Ickham manor. Thus, why Norris allocated this charter to his O section, with no further number, is curious. Bunce endorsed the charter with a description, in his standard way, but did not give it a further reference number. It does not seem to appear in either the Norris or Bunce catalogues. |
