| Description | From: Thomas Goldstone, IV, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory To: John Gason, of Ickham, yeoman
Recites an indenture dated 1 Dec 1485 between Prior William [Sellyng, I] and the convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and William Berton of Ickham, gent. By this Sir John Fyneux, knight, Chief Justice of England, then serjeant at law, Thomas Waller esq, William Brent, Stephen Baret, Henry Gosebourn', John Nethersole, Robert Tailleur and John Tanner were seised of various lands in Ickham parish, including the site of the manor of 'Berton', to the use of William Berton and his wife Elizabeth for the term of their lives. (Field names and acreages given.) After the deaths of William and Elizabeth, Sir John and the other feoffees were to hold the lands on behalf of the priory. William died and was survived by Elizabeth, who has also recently died. The priory has therefore sold the lands to John Gason. They have been measured at 152 acres, of which 130 are held by the tenure known as 'Weneland' or 'customeland' for fealty, suit of court, a relief and various payments, customs and services. The remaining 22 acres are held for fealty, suit of court, a relief and various payments. The priory has agreed that the customs and services can be commuted. The land is to be granted for a payment of 63s 4d, with a payment of 10s 1d called 'Tresorersrent', fealty, suit of court and a relief. The commutation is to be made by a composition. The lands are now held by John Rooper esq, John Hales, Simon Hoigges, Thomas Colsoll', Edmund Wilcok, Thomas Vynetre, Paul Richemond and Thomas Frenche, who shall convey them to John Gason and his feoffees by 25 Dec. John Gason is to receive the profits from the lands back dated to 24 Jun. For this John Gason is to pay a consideration of £152, payable as specified.
