[Document faded in places. Some place names and other details supplied from registered version.] William Berton of Ickham, gent, was seised, among other lands, of 152 acres of land in Ickham parish, of which 130 acres are part of the nine 'Wenelands' of Ickham, which he held of the manor of Ickham from Prior William [Sellyng, I]. (Details about the extent of the 'Wenelands' and field names and acreages for all properties given.) He held the 130 acres for fealty, suit of court, payments as specified, including a payment of eggs, various carrying services and a ploughing service ('Gavelerth') as specified, and held the 22 acres for fealty, suit of court and payments as specified, including an annual payment of 10s 1d called 'Tresoresrent', payable in the priory's treasury, and a payment of hens. John now holds the lands from Prior Thomas and wishes to commute the carrying and ploughing services and the payment of eggs. The priory has agreed to this and grants the lands to John for a total annual payment of 63s 4d. Reserving to the priory fealty, suit of court and a relief. Right of distraint if payment in arrears. In future John cannot be compelled to perform any of the labour services or to make the payments in kind. Priory's part of indenture. Given at the chapter house of Canterbury Cathedral Priory. |
