| Description | From: Sir James Rushout To: Robert Clayton, esq
Discusses his responsibility for reparing the chancel of Godmersham, about which Sir Lionel Jenkins has spoken to Robert on behalf of [William Juxon], archbishop of Canterbury. He is informed that the parishioners have prosecuted him [in the church courts] at Canterbury. He considers that it may be better to give up his claim to the chancel and pay a share of the general costs of repairing the church instead. However, he is undecided, because it may not be to his financial advantage and to do so may also disadvantage Gotherton. He complains of the cost of running Eggerton, his estate at Godmersham; any profits he makes have to be re-invested in the estate. He has asked Mr Jarret to consult Robert about the estate accounts. He asks Robert to recover what he can of a debt Mrs Blinkarne owes him (James). He has purchased some Muscatel wine at Frontignan [Hérault, France] and wishes to make Robert a present of some of it, but unless Robert has contacts at Bordeaux, he may have to wait for it until Christmas. Given at Montpellier [Hérault, France].
