Description | From: [Thomas], prior of St Gregory's Priory, Canterbury, papal judge delegate; the official of Canterbury, papal judge delegate; the penitentiary of Canterbury, papal judge delegate
They have received a commission (recited) from Pope Gregory [IX], dated 18 Jun 1229 at Perugia [Umbria, Italy]. The prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory has complained to the pope that the priory of Holy Trinity Priory [Aldgate], London, William of Charton [in Farningham], knight, and others, clerks and laymen, of the dioceses of Canterbury and Rochester, have injured them concerning their tithes, possessions, rents and other matters. They pope commands the addressees to summon the parties and hear and determine the case. They summoned the priory, represented by its proctor, and Ralph, rector of Eythorne, who appeared personally. The priory complained that it had been accustomed to receive an annual pension of 5s, payable as specified, from the rectors of Eythorne but that Ralph had withheld it for 3 years. The priory asked for the pension to be restored and for 15s compensation. Ralph acknowledged the priory's right to the pension and bound himself and his successors to pay it. The priory, for the sake of goodwill, remitted the expenses of the case and the arrears. The judges, with Ralph's consent, reserve the right to compel him to pay the pension if he ceases to do so. Sealed with the seals of the judges and Ralph's seal [only 2 seals now present.] Given at Canterbury Cathedral.
