Description | From: Peter of Teano ('Thean'') [Caserta, Italy], papal chaplain, corrector of papal letters, archdeacon of Palermo ('Panormitan'') [Sicily, Italy] and deputy ('locum...tenens') auditor of contradictory letters
Mgr James de Tarbus, proctor of John, rector of Eastry, obtained papal letters from Pope Nicholas III, dated 3 Nov 1279 at St Peter's Rome (recited), addressed to the archbishop of Canterbury. John had complained to the pope that the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory had injured him concerning the tithes, rents and profits of his church. The pope commanded the archbishop to summon the parties to London and decide the case. Mgr Philip de Pomonte, the priory's proctor, sought a copy for himself. Given at St Peter's Rome [Roma, Italy].
Endorsed with description, giving John's name as John bacon, in late 13th cent hands. |
