Description | From: Edward III, king of England To: Simon Islip, archbishop of Canterbury
Before the statute of mortmain was issued, Richard [of Dover], archbishop of Canterbury, granted the churches of Eastry and Monkton to the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory for the use of their almonry and the appropriation was confirmed by Popes Lucius III and Alexander III. Subsequently, Archbishop Baldwin instituted his clerks to the churches and assigned moieties of the churches to them, the other moieties remaining with the priory. Baldwin's successors have continued to retain the churches and their advowsons and the priory has been excluded from them. The king, at the request of Archbishop Simon Islip, who now holds the churches, has given the archbishop licence to restore the advowsons to the priory and to reunite the moieties of them which the clerks held with the other moieties. The priory is to hold the churches to the use of its almonry. The king also grants the priory licence to receive the churches, the statute of mortmain notwithstanding. Sent patent. By the king himself and by privy seal writ. The clerk is Codyngton'. Given at Westminster [Middlesex].
