Description | From: Simon Islip, archbishop of Canterbury and papal legate
He has inspected the letters of the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and William de Scothon, rector of Eastry, dated 4 Apr 1353, at Canterbury (recited). These stated that there had been disputes between the priory and William and his predecessors concerning an area of common land within the close shared by the rectory house and the house belonging to the priory's almoner, to whom a portion of the tithes of Eastry has been assigned. The parties, with the consent of the archbishop, as patron of Eastry, have divided the land. The priory is to have the part lying to west of an earth wall stretching from a wooden marker between the churchyard and the close and William is to have a piece of land 30 feet long and 29 feet wide, lying with the king's highway to south. William arranged to have the priory's part of the indenture sealed with the seal of the commissary general of Canterbury as well as his own seal, because his seal is unknown to many. The archbishop gives his consent to the division and confirms it. Given at Mayfield [Sussex]. |
