Description | Proceedings in Canterbury Cathedral before Mgr H[enry] de Sandford, archdeacon of Canterbury and Mgr R de Elham his official, with Mgr E[lias] de Dierham and Mgr H[amo] de Crauthorn also present.
The prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory with certain of his brothers, Robert de Nereford, constable of Dover Castle, Henry of Sandwich, knight, Turgisius, reeve ('prepositus') of Dover, and others were present. The archdeacon submitted 3 articles concerning Robert. First, it was alleged that the servants of Dover Castle went to the priory's estate at Eastry and took away fodder and corn for the castle. Robert was to ensure that these were returned by a specified time. Secondly, it was alleged that the priory's liberties within the town and port of Sandwich had been infringed by Thorold de kineli acting as bailiff [details given; the priory had its own bailiffs in Sandwich]. Robert promised that in future he would not do anything to harm the port of Sandwich or the priory's liberties there and would have those acting as bailiffs removed. If he could not, he would ensure they did not harm the priory's interests at Sandwich. Finally, Robert promised that he would obey the archbishop's mandate concerning the fairs at Pluckley and cause those whom he had sent to the fairs to make satisfaction to the archbishop and those who had suffered injury, on penalty of 5 tuns of wine and finding pledges. Turgisius, reeve of Dover, and John de Ounde stood surety. Dated the morrow of St Thomas Becket's day after the death of Simon of Apulia, bishop of Exeter. [Henry de Sandford's seal reunited with document on the basis of the entry in Beauvoir's catalogue, cited below.]
Endorsed with description, describing the document as an agreement between the priory and Robert, in mid 13th cent hand. |
