Confirmation of the grant by Henry I of Dover Priory to Theobald (sic) and the church of Canterbury, dated 14 Jan 1139 at the Lateran. Written by Americus, cardinal deacon and papal chancellor.
(2) Notification
From: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury
Notification of his ordinance concerning the status of Dover Priory (as in DCc-ChAnt/D/83). Witness list. No date [1157x1161]. [Date: as in Saltman, cited in DCc-ChAnt/D/83.]
(3) Grant and confirmation
From: Henry II, king of England
To: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury, and the church of Canterbury
Dover Priory, with all its possession on land and sea and in tolls, with the old tithe of herrings and the new tithe of fishery which the burgesses of Dover gave and offered upon the altar. The grant is made for the king's soul and the souls of his parents, the remission of his sins, the safety of his kingdom and especially for the soul of Henry I, his grandfather, who originally granted Dover Priory to the archbishop. Dover is to remain a Benedictine house as established by Pope Innocent II and Theobald and no-one is to change it to any other order; only the archbishop shall have the regulation of Dover Priory.
