Description | From: Edward II, king of England
Edward I in the 14th year of his reign [1285-1286] claimed the right to appoint priors ('advocatio') of Dover Priory against the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory. The prior claimed that the archbishop of Canterbury had given him the right of appointing a monk from his house as prior of Dover when that office fell vacant and cited an ordinance of Archbishop Theobald and a grant of Henry II in support of his claim. The king recovered seisin of this right and ruled that Theobald's ordinance was void and that the prior of Canterbury was not entitled to appoint one of his monks as prior of Dover. Edward II now restores the right of appointing priors of Dover to Archbishop Walter Reynolds as his predecessors had it, except that he shall always appoint a monk of Dover as prior there.Walter is to hold the right as fully as his predecessors held it before Theobald's ordinance. The grant is made for devotion to Canterbury Cathedral and St Thomas Becket. Sent patent. By the king himself. The clerk is Brayton'. Given at Westminster [Middlesex].
