Description | From: the abbot of Westminster Abbey; the prior of Westminster Abbey; the rural dean of London ('Dec' Lond'') To: the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory
Recites mandate of Pope Gregory IX, dated 16 Feb 1234 at the Lateran. The prior of Dover Priory has complained to the pope that, although, as a monk of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, he is entitled to be present at archiepiscopal elections, he was excluded from the recent election of Edmund [of Abingdon], treasurer of Salisbury, as archbishop. He appealed to the pope, but because of this the cathedral priory would not let him administer his spiritualities and temporalities and oppressed him and his monastery in other ways too. He has therefore sought a remedy from the pope. If this true, the pope commands the addressees to order the cathedral priory to make satisfaction and cease from troubling Dover Priory. The abbot and prior of Westminster and the dean of St Paul's cite the cathedral priory to appear before them at St Paul's Cathedral on 12 Jun to answer the prior of Dover. No date. [Date: date of the pope's mandate.]
