Description | From: Edmund of Abingdon, archbishop of Canterbury To: the subprior [and convent of Dover Priory]
[Document damaged. Large area of text lost in top right corner.] The archbishop has recently heard of the death of R[obert of Ulcombe], prior of Dover. He appoints E[ustace of Faversham, monk of Canterbury Cathedral Priory] as the new prior and orders the subprior and convent to revere and obey him. [The appointment was never effective, because Robert did not in fact die until 1248.] Given at South Malling [Sussex].
Endorsed with descriptions in mid and late 13th cent hands. One describes the documents as relating to the subjection of Dover Priory; the other says that it shows how St Edmund appointed his chaplain, a monk of the cathedral priory, as prior there. |
