Description | Copies of 3 mandates, all from Pope Gregory X to the archbishop of Canterbury [Robert Kilwardby].
(1) Dated 13 Feb 1273 at Orvieto [Treni, Italy]. The subprior and convent of Dover Priory have complained to him that although Dover has a papal privilege exempting it from the jurisdiction of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante, the cathedral priory claimed various rights over it and a dispute arose between them. A composition was made, to the harm of Dover Priory. Dover Priory has sought a remedy from the pope, who delegates the case to the archbishop.
(2) Dated 21 Mar 1273 at Orvieto [Treni, Italy]. Although the subprior and convent of Dover Priory have a papal privilege exempting them from the jurisdiction of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante, Geoffrey of Romney, third prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, and the chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, tried to impose their authority. Details of Geoffrey's actions against Dover Priory when Richard of Wincheap was prior of Dover, including the excommunication of Robert de Stanford [also known as Robert of Canterbury], the subprior, 9 named monks and other monks, and Dover Priory's appeals to the pope. Richard returned to Canterbury, where he had been a monk, and promised to prosecute Dover Priory's first appeal, but failed to do so. Dover Priory has therefore sought a remedy from the pope and the pope delegates the case to the archbishop.
(3) Dated 28 Apr 1273 at Orvieto [Treni, Italy]. Although the subprior and convent of Dover Priory have a papal privilege exempting them from the jurisdiction of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante, the prior and convent of Canterbury tried to impose their authority on Dover, citing a confirmation granted to them by Pope Urban [IV?] in justification. Details of right claimed by Canterbury under this confirmation. Dover Priory did not withdraw its obedience from Canterbury, but Canterbury nevertheless excommunicated the monks of Dover and placed the priory under interdict. Dover Priory has therefore sought a remedy from the pope and the pope delegates the case to the archbishop.
No date. [Date: the year when Archbishop Pecham began to hear the case himself on the basis of papal authority delegated to Kilwardby, as in related documents, cited below.] |
