Description | Record of proceedings before Mgr Philip de Barton, canon of Lichfield, Mgr John de rewyne, canon of Exeter, and Mgr Roger of Rothwell, archdeacon of Bedford, papal judges delegate, in a case between Mgr Richard de Ferringes, archdeacon of Canterbury, and the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, concerning sede vacante jurisdiction, on 20-22 Oct 1297. Mgr Thomas de Reynes and Guy of Littlebourne, clerk, Richard's proctors, were present. Recites letters from Pope Boniface VIII to Philip, John and Roger, dated 15 Mar 1297, at St Peter's, Rome, commanding the addressees to obtain answers to the archdeacon's positions from the priory, examine witnesses and provide copies of relevant documents. Also recites letters of proxy, dated 29 Jul 1297 at Orvieto [Treni, Italy], appointing Mgr William of Essex, Thomas and Guy as Richard's proctors. On 21 Oct Philip and John asked Prior Henry of Eastry to summon his monks to the chapter house, but was told that they were in choir. On 22 Oct the prior and monks met in the chapter house and the executors read the letters. John de Reydon', the priory's proctor, was also present. The executors also opened 3 rolls sealed with the seal of Matthew [de Aquasparta], cardinal bishop of Porto, one of the auditors appointed by the pope, containing various interrogatories and articles of both parties. The priory requested copies of the archdeacon's articles.The parties were to appear before Philip, John de rewyne and Roger in the nave of Canterbury Cathedral on 12 Nov.
