DescriptionActa before the archdeacons of London ('maior'') and Middlesex [Mgr Richard de Swinfield and Mgr Ralph de Baldock], commissaries of John Pecham, archbishop of Canterbury, in the chapter house of St Paul's Cathedral, London, on 19 Oct 1282. The archbishop is papal judge delegate in cases between the subprior and convent of Dover Priory, plaintiffs ('actores'), represented by the subprior as their proctor, and the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory and Geoffrey of Romney, monk of the cathedral priory, defendants ('rei'), whose proctor is Hugh de Dereby, clerk, substituting for John of Dover. The cases concern the breaking of a confirmation sought by the cathedral priory from Pope Urban [IV?], the restoration of a composition between the parties which had been to the disadvantage of Dover Priory, and cases of unjust excommunication and appeal against Geoffrey. Documents as specified were read, including a mandate to the rural dean of Canterbury, ordering him to command the prior of Dover to be present to promote these cases if it seemed expedient to him. The judges asked both parties if they wished to proceed with the cases. Both parties objected to the other's letters of proxy and Hugh requested copies of the documents exhibited by Dover Priory. The judges ordered copies of the relevant documents to be made. The date of the next sitting was fixed for 12 Nov, when the prior of Dover [Anselm of Eastry] was to say whether he wished to assist his subprior and convent in defending the cases.

Endorsed with description, describing the document as mentioning the process between the subprior of Dover and Geoffrey sede vacante, in late 13th cent hand.
