DescriptionFrom: Robert Kilwardby, archbishop of Canterbury
To: the archdeacon of Canterbury

Recites mandate from Pope Gregory X, dated 13 Feb 1273, at Orvieto [Treni, Italy]. [Part of date lost; date supplied from the archdeacon's certificate, DCc-ChAnt/D/116]. The subprior and convent of Dover Priory have complained to him that although Dover has a papal privilege exempting it from the authority of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sede vacante, the cathedral priory claimed various rights over it and a dispute arose between them. A composition was made, to the harm of Dover Priory. Dover Priory has sought a remedy from the pope, who delegates the case to the archbishop.
The archbishop orders the archdeacon to cite the prior and chapter of Canterbury to appear before him or his deputy at St Mary-le-Bow church, London, on 15 Sep. The archdeacon is to provide the cathedral priory with copies of the composition and the libel.
Recites the composition, dated 1235, which contains various provisions relating to the cathedral priory's rights over Dover Priory. Also recites the libel submitted on behalf of Dover Priory by Robert of Canterbury, Dover Priory's subprior and proctor. This claims that Archbishop Boniface of Savoy annulled the composition because it was to the prejudice of Dover Priory and future archbishops. Robert of Canterbury also claims that that the composition was made in the time Prior William of Dover, who had been professed at Canterbury and favoured Canterbury over Dover, and that Dover Priory was subjugated to Canterbury by fraud. Details of the disputed points.
Given at Charing [Kent].
