Description | From: Robert the constable ('Constabularius'), earl of Warenne To: Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the men of Deopham
Robert has been in dispute with the priory and the men of Deopham concerning a pasture between Deopham and Attleborough ('Aetleburch') [Norfolk]. He now renounces his claim to that pasture. As far as he can, he grants the uncultivated area of the pasture to the priory. He has cultivated an area of the pasture 12 perches wide and 12 perches long, which he will enclose and he will also enclose a broad way through the pasture by which the men of Deopham can take their animals and carts to Attleborough. After the harvest, the men of Deopham can pasture their animals on this land until it is sown again. Robert also grants the pasture called 'gresinge' to the men of Deopham and his men as common. The grant is made for the souls of his father and mother and his sons and is made with the consent of his living sons. To preserve these things, he has pledged his faith to William son of Ulri. No date. [Date: handwriting. The cathedral priory's 2nd seal was first used c1158.]
