Description | From: Pope John XXIII To: the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory
A petition from the prior and convent of Dover Priory has shown that they appropriated the old parish church of St Martin's Dover and that it was staffed by a secular priest, now replaced by a monk called and archpriest who is appointed and removed by the prior. However, the income from the church is inadequate to maintain the archpriest and the priory asks the pope to grant that one of their monks may serve the church in future. If this is so, the pope commands the prior of Canterbury to grant Dover Priory licence for one of its monks to serve the church when the present archpriest dies or leaves. Given at St Peter's, Rome [Roma, Italy]. |
