Description | Party: Lady Margaret, [dowager] countess of Devon Party: Monsieur Edward Courtenay, earl of Devon
John Coltton, clerk, was formerly seised of the manors of 'Shenyok', Landulph ('Landhilp') and 'Trelugan', Cornwall, the manor of Cornwood, Devon, and the manors of Henton ('Heneton'') and Mudford ('Modeford''), Somerset. John granted an annual payement of £100 from the manors of 'Shenyok', Landulph ('Landhilp') and 'Trelugan', an annual payment of £10 from the manor of Cornwood and an annual payment of £60 from the manors of 'Heveton'' and Mudford to Hugh Courtenay, late earl of Devon, Margaret's husband, for the lives of Hugh and Margaret, by 3 separate deeds. Margaret will deliver and pledge the 3 deeds to William [Courtenay] archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas [Brantingham], bishop of Exeter, and Ralph [Erghum], bishop of Salisbury, jointly on condition that if she survives Edward the deeds will be returned to her. If Margaret dies before Edward, however, the deeds are to be delivered to him. Margaret discharges Edward of any arrears from the rents, but may claim them if she survives him. Edward grants Margaret the manor of 'Mosebury' [unidentified, possibly Musbury, Devon] for life, on condition that she grants her estate in it to him, reserving to herself an annual payment of £20, payable as specified, and fuel from the woods of 'Mosebury' and 'Tril' [unidentified] for her household when she stays at the manor of 'Colecomb'' [unidentified]. If Margaret survives Edward, she shall hold the manor for life. Right of distraint and re-entry if payment in arrears. If Edward violates the terms of agreement and this cannot be settled by the advice of the archbishop and the bishop of Exeter, then the archbishop and bishops shall return the deeds for the 3 rents to Margaret and she is to return the deed relating to the grant of the manor of 'Mosebury' to Edward and release him from the rent of £20. Margaret has sealed with her signet, because her principal seal is in the archbishop's custody. [Margaret was the wife of Hugh Courtenay, 2nd earl of Devon, and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford and Essex, and Elizabeth, daughter of Edward I.] |
