Charles Lipyeat of the city of Canterbury, tailor, by an indenture dated 27 Mar 1691, leased Richard Pembrooke senior a piece of land in St Mary Magdalen parish called 'the Town Dike', adjoining the walls of the city and extending from the middle tower next to St George's Gate to Charles's other piece of land towards Burgate, for a term of 20 years for an annual payment of 30s. Richard subsequently died and Richard his son and Mary proved his will and became entitled to the land. Richard, William and Mary assign the land to John for the residue of the term of 20 years. John promises to pay the rent and perform the covenants specified in the original lease and will save Richard, William and Mary harmless against any claims resulting from his failure to observe the conditions of the lease. For this John has paid 5s. Richard's signature on plica.
