| Description | From: Pope John XXII To: Walter Reynolds, archbishop of Canterbury
'Copia bulle de manerio de Caledcote' at head of document. The archbishop has submitted a petition, showing that the goods annexed to his table include a retreat ('receptaculum') at Caldecote next to the city of Canterbury with certain adjoining land valued at about £10. He wishes to assign this property to the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory so that they can refresh themselves when fatigued by blood-letting and other labours, but is prevented from doing so by the oath which he took at the time of his promotion not to alienate the goods of his church. He therefore asks the pope's permission to make the grant. The pope gives the archbishop licence to grant Caldecote to the priory and absolves him from his oath as far as it concerns this, although he is to remain bound by it in all other matters. No date. [Date: date of original.] Original dated 15 Oct 1326 at Avignon [Vaucluse, France].
Endorsed with description and note relating to a petition by the monks of Dover Priory in 14th cent hands. |
