Description | From: Robert Cumberland of Canterbury Cathedral Precincts, tailor To: John Somner of the city of Canterbury, mercer
A messuage occupied by John in St Alphege parish, Canterbury, lying with the new south gate of Canterbury Cathedral to east, the common street to south and the porter's lodge of the same gate to north, and standing for 4 fairs a year, extending from the side of the gate to the messuage, together with the remainder and reversion of the property and all documents concerning it. Robert covenants to save John harmless from all charges against the property. Robert and Elizabeth, his wife, will, within 7 years, execute any other deeds necessary to assure John's title to the property, at John's expense. Robert purchased the lands from Randolph Ludd of Canterbury, glazier, by an indenture date 2 Aug 1656, and this indenture contains a covenant stipulating that Robert should pay 43s 4d towards a sum of £600 to be paid for charitable purposes when required and should save Randolph harmless concerning this payment. John agrees to save Robert harmless concerning this payment. For this John has paid £105. Robert's signature on plica. John's part of indenture.
