| Description | Party: the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory Party: William de pykering' ('dictus de pykering'')
[Document damaged. Several small areas of text lost or illegible. Some witnesses' names supplied from registered version.] There has been a dispute concerning a piece of land belonging to the priory's house in Mercery Lane ('merceria'), adjoining William's house to north, in which (the priory's house), Stephen the spicer ('speciarius') then lived. William had unjustly occupied the land, as appeared [by an inquiry] before Thomas Chicche and J de Standune, bailiffs of Canterbury ('ballivus ville'), and others. The dispute has now been settled. William will, at his own cost, make and maintain a gutter from the west end of his house to the king's highway, to receive the water dripping from each house, as an easement of the land, and will pay the priory an annual payment of 2d for the easement, payable as specified in the priory's treasury. If the priory suffers any loss because the gutter is not made or maintained or the 2d is not paid, William grants that it may distrain his tenement. Dated 1281, no month. [Date: Thomas Chicche and John de Standon were bailiffs to 29 Sep 1281, see Urry, Chief Citizens.]
Witnesses: Thomas Chicche, bailiff of Canterbury ('ballivus ville'); J de Standune, bailiff of Canterbury ('ballivus ville'); Daniel hubert; Stephen Chicche; Simon payable; William Isely; Roger burre; Anselm the cheese-maker ('casearius'); Adam the spicer ('speciarius'); Adam de Waldis; Thomas Reynald; Thomas of Fordwich; Henry of Eastry
Endorsed with description, showing that the agreement relates to St Andrew's parish, in late 13th cent hands. |
