By letters patent dated 12 Aug 1528, at Hampton Court, Henry VIII granted a licence to the archbishop to grant lands to the annual value of £20 to the cathedral priory to maintain 1 or 2 chaplains to say prayers for the good estate of the king and Katherine, his queen, for their souls after their deaths, for the souls of their parents, for the good estate of the archbishop during his life, for his soul after his death, for the souls of his parents and benefactors, and for the faithful departed. These are to be said daily in the chapel in the cathedral church which the archbishop has built beside 'The Martirdom of Seynt Thomas' [ie north-west transept]. On 22 Mar 1529 the archbishop gave the priory lands as specified in Chislet. The priory will pay 60s to 2 or 3 students at Canterbury College, Oxford.
