(1) Writ, in Latin From: Stephen, king of England To: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury; the monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory All lands which they had in the time of King Edward [the confessor], his kinsman, King William [I], his grandfather, and King Henry [I], his uncle, with rights and liberties as specified, over their men in boroughs and outside, as much and as fully as his own servants ought to seek them, and also over as many thanes as the said kings granted to them. The grant is made for his soul, as the said kings did before. Partial witness list [Philip [de Harcourt], bishop of Bayeux [Calvados, France]; Arnulf, bishop of Lisieux [Calvados, France]; Thomas [Becket], chancellor; Reginald, earl of Cornwall; R...; ...of Essex, constable]. Given at York, no date [1155xJul 1157, possibly JanxFeb 1155]. [Date: before the disgrace of Henry of Essex on the Welsh campaign of Jul 1157. The king's one recorded visit to York during this period occurred during Jan/Feb 1155.
