DescriptionFrom: Peter [Després], archbishop of Aix [Bouches-du-Rhône, France], auditor of contradictory letters

Mgr Ralph de Horncastr', proctor of the abbot and convent of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, obtained papal letters from Pope John XXII, dated 20 Dec 1319 at Avignon [Vaucluse, France], addressed to the prior of St Gregory's Priory, Canterbury (recited). The abbey has complained that many parishioners of Preston [next Wingham], which it has appropriated, have refused to pay it the tithes it needs to maintain a vicar there, claiming that they had not paid the tithes before. The pope commands the prior to compel them to pay by ecclesiastical censure.
Mgr Brice de Sharsted, proctor of the prior and chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, opposed these letters, but withdrew his opposition on condition that the priory and its officials and servants as parishioners of Preston [next Wingham] should not be summoned by these letters and that the letters should not be extended to them, which Ralph promised before Peter. Letter 'G' at end of document.
Given at Avignon [Vaucluse, France].
