| Description | From: Henry of Eastry, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory; the chapter of Canterbury Cathedral Priory
There has been a dispute between the priory and Walter Scammel, bishop of Salisbury, because Walter was elected bishop by John Pecham, archbishop of Canterbury, without his election being examined and confirmed by the priory and was not consecrated at Canterbury Cathedral and the priory appealed to the pope. At the instance of King Edward I, the priory submitted to the arbitration of Mgr Gilbert de sancto Leofardo, official of the court of Canterbury, and Richard de Ferringe, archdeacon of Canterbury. Among other things, the arbitrators ordered the priory to withdraw from these disputes and ordered the bishop to pay the priory £100, on condition that the priory promised that it would return the money to him if it moved any lawsuits against him concerning these matters in future. The priory submits itself to the jurisdiction of the official of the court of Canterbury, who can compel it to observe these things by ecclesiastical censure. Sealed with the seals of Gilbert and Richard [Richard's seal no longer present.] Priory's part of indenture. Given at the chapter house of Canterbury Cathedral Priory.
Endorsed with description and 'W Scamel' in late 13th cent hands. |
