The have inspected certain instruments which the monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory need for their business at the papal curia but fear to send there because of possible dangers on the journey, consisting of a privilege of Pope Alexander III and charters of Anselm and Thomas Becket, archbishops of Canterbury. Recites:
(1) Privilege of Alexander III, date 20 Nov 1177 at Anagni [Roma, Italy], confirming the priory's possessions and granting and confirming many liberties and privileges. Includes provisions concerning exemption from the archdeacon's jurisdiction, the subjection of Dover Priory, the election of new priors, and right of burial within the priory.
(2) Charter of Anselm, confirming the priory's possessions and making an additional grant [most of text lost]. No date [1093x1109]. [Date: Anselm's dates.]
(3) Charter of Thomas Becket granting various privileges to the priory. No date. [If genuine, this can be dated 1170, but Cheney, cited below, argues that it is a forgery, produced in 1235-1236.]
No date. [Date: Peter de Doy became bishop of Terouane in 1229; Peter de Colmieu became archbishop of Rouen in 1237. If Cheney's date for the production of the Becket charter is correct, the document is dated 1235x1237.]
