| Description | Memorandum concerning the seizure of Canterbury Cathedral Priory by Mgr Henry de Bray, the king's [Edward I's] escheator this side of the Trent, after the resignation of Prior Thomas de Ringmere on 17 Mar 1285. The subprior and chapter appealed to the king and he released the priory. A search of the exchequer's records (recited) showed that the priory had only been taken into the king's hands in 13 and 14 John [1211-1213], but this was not a true vacancy, because the priory had gone into exile. The king declared that that in future his escheator was not to intrude into the priory during vacancies and issued a writ to Henry de Bray, dated 1 Jun 1285, at Westminster (recited), ordering him to return the profits he had received during the vacancy to the priory and not to intrude there in future vacancies. No date. [Date: handwriting.] |
