Description | From: the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory To: [Henry VII], king of England
William att Wode, now mayor of Canterbury, Thomas att Wode, Willliam Megge, John Wryght and others of the same city rioted and removed the fish market from Burgate. For this and other misdemeanours they were summoned to appear before the court of Star Chamber in Westminster. The king also commanded William to return the market to its former site until the dispute was investigated. The market was moved back and William and the others appeared before Star Chamber at Michaelmas term last. The matter could not be settled and it was ordered that the market should remain where it was until it could. However, William and the others moved the market again and refused to let the priory buy fish there and when the priory bought fish elsewhere confiscated them. When the king's council was informed it decreed that the market should be returned to its old site, but William att Wode, William Megge, Leonard Fenkyll', John Wright, William Priour' and others caused a proclamation to be issued inciting the people to disobey the king's command. The priory asks the king to send letters to William, ordering him to obey. No date. [Date: date of original.] Original no date [c1501]. [Date: William att Wode was elected mayor on 14 Sep 1500.] |
