| Description | Court papers relating to disputes between the priory and the city. DCc-ChAnt/C/1232/2-5 concern a dispute between the priory and the city over various matters c1428, finally settled by the arbitration of Archbishop Henry Chichele. DCc-ChAnt/C/1232/1 and 6-23 relate to the 'Mayor's Riot' in 1500. The priory brought a case against the city and secured a favourable verdict, which, however, the city did not accept. The priory subsequently took the case to the court of Star Chamber. DCc-ChAnt/C/1232/24 appears to be for an unrelated case from the late 15th century. These documents were originally catalogued as DCc-ChAnt/C/1232 and DCc-ChAnt/C/1235, which Sheppard, in the appendix to the 5th report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission, cited below, describes as 6 paper and 2 parchment rolls [he subsequently describes DCc-ChAnt/C/1235 as being 15 feet long.] Some time before Jun 1974 the documents were repaired and were all referenced as DCc-ChAnt/C/1232. For convenience, these documents have been catalogued separately. |
