Description | Plaintiff: Roger de Bavent; Sara, wife of Roger de Bavent Deforciant: Peter de Codynton' [Document damaged. some text legible only under ultra violet light.] In the king's court at Cambridge before William of York, provost of Beverley [College, Yorkshire], itinerant justice, on 6 Oct 1240. Roger is acting as Sara's proxy. Peter was called to warranty by Walter de Merton and warranted 2 parts of 2 knights' fee in Malden, Chessington ('Chysendene') and 'Pistelegh' [all Surrey?], except 3 virgates of land. Roger and Sara acknowledged that the 2 parts were the right of Peter. Roger and Sara also granted for themselves and Sara's heirs that the fee of 1 knight in Farleigh [Surrey?] which William de Whytefeld and Isabel, his wife, held as Isabel's dower of the gift of Richard son of Brian, Isabel's late husband, namely the third part of the 2 knights' fees in the said vills ('villa') which Cecilia de Gr.neval held in dower of the gift of Eudo son of Brian, Cecilia's late husband and Brian's brother, should revert to Peter after the deaths of Isabel and Cecilia, to be held with the rest of the 2 knights' fees. For this Peter has quitclaimed to Roger and Sara and Sara's heirs through Gunnora of Malden ('Maudon'), sister of Eudonia? daughter of Alan and the heirs of Sara's body for the manor of Cocking in Sussex and paid Roger and Sara 30 marks. Made in the presence of William de Watermell', who granted it ('eam concedent'') and in the presence of William de Whytefelde, Isabel and Cecilia, who acknowledged by their attorney that they have no claim in the said fee except by way of dower. No date. [Date: handwriting.] |
