Description | From: Hubert de Burgh, the king's justiciar
At Hubert's request and the request of the citizens of Canterbury, the monks of Canterbury Cathedral Priory sold the citizens some of their wood to make hurdles ('cleia') for the city's defence. Because it is clear to Hubert from the charters of King John that the priory is not bound to fortify the city and so that the sale cannot be to the priory's' prejudice in future, he declares the priory's right and liberties and the right and liberties of the church of Canterbury against the sale. No date. [Date: Hubert was appointed on 15 Jun 1215 and refers to John as 'Regis noster'.]
