Description | From: Henry II, king of England
The king confirms the agreement made before him between Herlewin, I, prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, and the convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory, and Gervase de Cornhulla, Reginald his son and Matilda, Reginald's wife, daughter of Hamo, and the exchange made between the monks and them. Gervase, Reginald and Matilda, for their souls and of the king's grant, gave the priory a piece of land which Gervase had behind its bell-tower ('Clocarium'), one part of which he had bought and the other part of which was of Matilda' inheritance, because the buildings on it were a danger to the cathedral church because of frequent fires. In exchange, the priory gave them certain land which it had in Friday Street, London, which Theodoric, John the priest ('presbiter') and Giffard held, which land the priory had previously given to Gervase in fee and inheritance for an annual payment of 20s. Now the priory has granted the land to Gervase, Reginald and Matilda to be held free and quit of all service in perpetuity. No date. [Date: Herlewin's dates. Urry suggests late Aug 1179, following the king's reception of Louis VII at Canterbury and after Herlewin's resignation on 6 Aug. We are grateful to Prof Nicholas Vincent of the British Academy-AHRB 'Acta of the Plantagenets' Project for advice on this date.] Given at Westminster [Middlesex].
