A messuage lying between the land of the prior of St Gregory's Priory [Canterbury] and the barn of Richard the steward ('senescallus') and between the cathedral priory's garden and the king's highway which leads to Fordwich. For an annual payment of a rose, payable as specified. For this the priory has also paid 1 marks as a gersum fine. No date. Endorsed with 'per Neyrford'' in mid 13th cent hand and description, showing that the grant relates to Barton manor [in Canterbury], in late 13th cent hands. Also endorsed with a note that the warden of Barton manor should warrant a way 7 feet wide outside the ditch of the land which Adam, William and Simon sold to the priory in the time of 'Dompnus' William de Neirford [the priory's bartoner], because of which ditch the vendors should pay the warden of Barton ½d as a quit-rent ('forgabulum') at Barton as specified. |
