William [of Sainte-Mère-Église], bishop of London, consecrated him as bishop on 28 May 1206 in St Mary's Chapel, Reading, the see of Canterbury being vacant. 'Dominus' John [of Ferentino], cardinal-deacon of S Maria in Via Lata, papal legate, gave permission for the consecration to take place elsewhere than in Canterbury.
