Description | From: Robert Bertelot, bailiff ('ballivus') of the city of Canterbury; William Osebarn, bailiff ('ballivus') of the city of Canterbury
At the request of Nicholas maior they have inspected a charter dated 5 Sep 1428 which John Cray made to him of all John's lands and tenements anywhere in Kent, for which lands Nicholas pledged a relief because they are within the liberty of the city of Canterbury, as is shown in the rolls of the alderman of Northgate ward. John claimed that he never delivered sesin of the lands to Nicholas and, at Nicholas's request, the bailiffs examined witnesses to establish the truth. John kippynge, who made and wrote the charter, and John Stace, who was present when it was made, deposed that they were present on 3 acres of land lying within the liberty of the city of Canterbury and saw John take ('accipio') land from the 3 acres and hand it to Nicholas, together with charter, by way of seisin of all the lands contained in charter. Nicholas Crosseby swore that soon after the seisin was made John told him that he had enfeoffed Nicholas maior in the lands and had personally delivered therefrom ('inde') to him. Given at Canterbury.
