| Description | From: Alexander, dean of Wells Cathedral; William of Chard ('Cerd'), canon of Wells Cathedral To: Henry de Carevilla
Reciting a mandate from Archbishop Hubert Walter to hear a case brought against him by the prior and convent of Bruton ('Briweton' [Somerset]). Henry, with the counsel of G de Brocton, interfered with the priory's only washing conduit ('sol' aq' ductu' lavatoris') lying on his land and demanded unjust customs from the priory and its men. John of Cadbury ('Cadeb''), dean, and the chapter of Cary [rural deanery, Somerset] have pronounced a sentence, specified. Henry has appealed, and the archbishop asks the judges to establish whether this appeal was made before the sentence. The judges cite him to appear in 'Chilleton' [presumably Chilton Cantelo] Church on 18 Nov. No date. [Date: archbishop's dates. The archbishop's mandate does not date from between Apr 1195 and Feb 1198 as he does not use his legatine title. See EEA II Canterbury, plvi.] |
