Description | From: John Pecham, archbishop of Canterbury To: the prior and convent of Canterbury Cathedral Priory
In order to leave a record for successive archbishops, giving an account of his visitation of the dioceses of St Asaph and St Davids in Wales. Thomas [Bek], bishop of St Davids, revived the claim of metropolitical status for the see. A dispute concerning this had arisen between Archbishop Hubert Walter and [Gerald of Wales], bishop-elect of St Davids. Pecham quotes his reply to Bek. Cites a letter, written at Hampton [Lucy, Warwickshire] on [12 Aug] 1284, declaring that he will not undermine the rights of the see of St Davids during his visitation. [Registered in Pecham's register. See below.] He sent a similar letter, written on [7 Aug] at Llanthony Prima, [to the bishop of Llandaff] concerning the visitation of that diocese. [Similar note in register. See below.] Prob 28 Aug. [Document dated 5 kalends August, ie 28 Jul, in error.]
